10 Tips to Prepare Kids for Moving

What you do and say, and how you plan ahead, can make a big difference in how your children feel about moving, and how they adjust to the transition ahead. Consider these tips to help pave the road for a smooth move.

Share the news with everyone in the family as soon as possible.
Consider having a family meeting. That way everyone will know the circumstances, and you can answer questions, and listen to concerns.

Don't make promises about the move that you can't keep.
You don't want your children to have unmet expectations about moving and then blame you for things not going as promised.

Be ready to answer three big questions: Why are we moving? Where are we going? When will we move?
Spend some time explaining each answer and give as much information as possible. The more time your children have to process everything you've told them, the better.

Keep everyone up-to-date by informing them daily or weekly about what is going on.
Children don't like surprises when it comes to life-changing events.

Make the move a team effort.
Involve them in the moving process.  Give them simple, not overwhelming, tasks to be done.

Share stories of your own childhood moves.
Children love to hear about their parents' adventures in moving. Share experiences about how you felt and what you did when you moved as a child. It will help to bridge mutual understanding and create a common bond.

Give them a little extra one-on-one time.
Sometimes children need some extra tender loving care during the moving process.

Focus on the positive.
Talk the move up, not down!  There's always something positive about wherever you are moving.

Check out where you are moving.
Find out all you can at the library or on the Internet. Books with pictures are great for visualizing a city or state.

Remember, the best way to prepare, is to pray!
Pray for your children in their adjustment and transition of this move--the first thing every morning and the last thing every night!
