The Bible teaches we are to live by faith. Faith is literally a belief and a conviction that we feel in our hearts that God is the only true and living God. If we believe in him we will have everlasting life and if we have faith we can do all things with God’s help.
Faith has to be cultivated. A baby does not just stand up one day and walk like an adult. At first the baby pulls up from a sitting position, he then holds on to the furniture to try out his legs. As he gains courage and faith he lets one hand go and he begins to test his ability and belief in himself. After a thousand splats on his bottom, he will get up and try again. Finally, he masters walking. All it took was faith and strong determination.
Our faith in God is like that of a small child. We have to use stepping stones. We hear sermons on faith preached all the time. “If you have the faith of a mustard seed, you can move mountains”. “Faith is the victory”. “Live by faith”. One doesn’t wake up one morning and have true, complete faith. Every day we use our stepping stones leading us to a faith that will comfort us. Another stepping stone of faith that will help us through the darkest times in our lives. Then another stepping stone that shows we do have true abiding faith, faith that may falter at times, but a faith that is steadfast and God based.
Many times we feel pressured to say we have complete faith in God. While in our hearts we wish it was so, but in our heads, we are still holding on to the notion that we are in control. Don’t be hard on yourself. God understands we are a work in progress. He has lain each stepping stone for us to walk in true, abiding faith one step at a time.
